ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A Southern California Army veteran known for his heavily decorated “Trump House” is fighting for his life after a violent assault outside his Escondido home, according to authorities and his family.
Kerry Sheron, 69, was found suffering from catastrophic injuries after police responded to an assault reported around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street.
A utility worker who witnessed the confrontation reportedly intervened and helped restrain the suspect until officers arrived. Sheron was rushed to a nearby trauma center and remained in critical condition in an intensive care unit.
Wife Expresses Deep Concern Over Husband’s Condition
His wife, Maria Garcia, later provided a deeply concerning update, saying she did not believe her husband would survive his injuries.
The attack has drawn additional attention because of Sheron’s highly visible home, which has become known locally as the “Trump House.” The property is covered with American flags, patriotic decorations and displays supporting President Donald Trump, making it a recognizable landmark in the community.
Garcia suggested that the home’s political symbolism could have contributed to hostility toward her husband, although investigators have not publicly confirmed that politics played a role in the assault.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Police arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler following the incident. He was charged with attempted murder and booked into the Vista Detention Facility, where he remains in custody.
Authorities said Butler fled the area after the confrontation but was located and arrested shortly afterward. A bystander who attempted to intervene also suffered injuries.
The motive remains under investigation.
Mental Health Concerns Raised About Suspect
A person identified as a friend of Butler told local media that the suspect is a Navy veteran who had experienced serious mental-health difficulties. The friend reportedly described Butler as increasingly paranoid and unstable and said his behavior had deteriorated in recent months.
Those claims have not been independently established by authorities and do not constitute an official explanation for the attack.
Political Reactions and Investigation Status
The incident has nevertheless prompted political reactions. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., called for a “full and immediate investigation” and raised concerns about political violence against Trump supporters.
Investigators, however, have not announced evidence establishing that Sheron was targeted because of his political beliefs, his support for Trump or the displays at his residence.
Authorities are continuing to examine witness statements, physical evidence and the circumstances leading up to the confrontation as they work to determine what triggered the violence.

For Sheron’s family, the political questions remain secondary to his medical condition. The veteran, who spent years openly displaying his patriotism outside his home, is now fighting for his life.
