Rubio detailed the unusual incident during an appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast, explaining it occurred while he and other officials were returning from China. The passenger remained motionless in an Air Force One conference room despite significant activity and noise surrounding them.

Officials observed the individual sleeping through “a lot of noise” without appearing to respond to any stimuli, according to Rubio. He also noted the person’s breathing pattern seemed “difficult,” which heightened concerns among those monitoring the situation.
The group faced a dilemma: waking the passenger risked embarrassment if they were simply in deep sleep, but failing to act posed a different concern. “If they were dead, like what do you do?” Rubio said. “You have a dead body on the plane.”
Despite these worries, approximately 90 minutes elapsed before officials reached a resolution. “Luckily, the person was fine,” Rubio said, without identifying who the passenger was or providing additional details about when the flight occurred.

The mystery prompted widespread speculation online, with some social media users suggesting Senator Mitch McConnell could have been involved. No evidence supported this claim or any other identities circulated on the internet, and Rubio declined to clarify.
Context and Questions
Rubio’s account drew added attention given a separate controversy from roughly one month earlier. During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Democratic California Representative Ted Lieu asked Rubio whether President Donald Trump had fallen asleep during multiple meetings.
“I’ve never seen him fall asleep,” Rubio responded at the time. “On the contrary, the guy doesn’t sleep, which is a big problem.” Lieu disputed this account and referenced video footage from a Cabinet meeting he said showed Trump with his eyes closed.
Rubio maintained his testimony that he had never personally witnessed Trump fall asleep. No formal congressional action following Lieu’s accusation has been reported.
