WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump drew renewed attention to his long-running dispute with CNN during a July 12, 2026, appearance on the network, telling anchor Jake Tapper that his administration was trying to move CNN onto what he called a “normal path.”
The comment came at the conclusion of a brief phone interview on State of the Union, during which Trump discussed the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who had been a longtime political ally. Tapper attempted to move toward other subjects, including the war involving Iran, but Trump declined to discuss additional issues out of respect for Graham.
As the conversation ended, Tapper invited Trump to return for a longer interview.
Trump agreed before adding an unsolicited comment about the network.
“We’re trying to have CNN go on a normal path, and we will do that,” Trump said.
Tapper responded: “Well, I’m on a normal path right here, sir, and I appreciate your time.”
Trump replied, “Good. You are.”
The exchange quickly attracted attention because Trump has spent years publicly criticizing CNN and its coverage of his administration and political activities.
What Trump Meant by a “Normal Path”
Trump did not provide a detailed explanation during the exchange of what he meant by putting CNN on a “normal path.” The remark therefore does not, by itself, establish that the White House has formal control over CNN’s editorial decisions.
It does, however, provide another example of Trump’s public interest in the direction of the network. His criticism of CNN has been longstanding, while the company has simultaneously been undergoing a major change in corporate ownership.
That ownership change is significant to the broader media story.
In June, the Justice Department announced that its Antitrust Division had completed its investigation of Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery and concluded that the transaction was unlikely to harm competition or American consumers. Warner Bros. Discovery owns CNN.
The proposed transaction, valued at roughly $110 billion, would bring CNN under the same corporate umbrella as CBS News, Paramount Pictures and other major media properties.
The regulatory process did not end with the Justice Department decision. State attorneys general subsequently challenged the transaction, but those legal challenges were later resolved through settlements that cleared another major obstacle to completion.
Questions About Editorial Independence
The ownership transition has generated discussion inside and outside the media industry about how CNN’s editorial operation will function under new ownership.
Reuters reported in September that Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison is preparing to assume control of major news organizations including CNN and CBS News. The company has proposed an editorial-independence board intended to oversee journalistic standards, although media analysts and industry observers have questioned how much authority the board would actually possess.
Those concerns form part of a larger debate over media consolidation and the relationship between political leaders and privately owned news organizations.
Trump’s comment to Tapper adds another element to that discussion, particularly because it came directly from the president and specifically referenced the direction of CNN.
Still, the available transcript does not show Trump outlining a mechanism through which his administration would control CNN’s reporting. Nor did Tapper’s response amount to an explicit statement that CNN had agreed to change its editorial policies.
A Short Exchange With Broader Implications
The July interview lasted only a few minutes, but the closing exchange became the most widely discussed portion.
Trump’s decision to limit the interview to Graham also illustrates the boundaries of the conversation. Tapper acknowledged that Trump did not want to discuss other subjects and said CNN would welcome him back for a future interview in which additional questions could be addressed.
