WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump reignited his long-running dispute with CNN during a brief July 12, 2026, appearance on the network, telling anchor Jake Tapper that he was trying to have CNN move onto what he described as a “normal path.”
The unusual exchange came at the end of a short telephone interview on CNN’s State of the Union. Trump had called the program to discuss the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican and longtime political ally who had died suddenly.
Tapper initially focused the conversation on Graham and his political legacy. When the anchor attempted to move toward other issues, including the conflict involving Iran, Trump declined to continue on those subjects, saying he wanted to speak about Graham out of respect for the late senator.
As the conversation concluded, Tapper invited Trump to return for a longer interview.
Trump agreed. But before ending the call, he made an unsolicited comment about CNN.
“We’re trying to have CNN go on a normal path,” Trump said. “And we will do that.”
Tapper responded, “Well, I’m on a normal path right here, sir, and I appreciate your time.”
The exchange was documented in CNN’s transcript of the interview.
Trump’s remarks immediately attracted attention because of his extensive history of criticism toward CNN.
Throughout his political career, Trump has frequently challenged the network’s coverage of his presidency, campaigns and policies. His relationship with CNN has often been contentious, making his decision to appear on State of the Union notable in itself.

The Justice Department’s Antitrust Division announced in June that it had completed its investigation of Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The department said its review found that the transaction was unlikely to harm competition or American consumers. The proposed transaction has been valued at approximately $110 billion.
If completed, the transaction would bring CNN and CBS News under the same corporate ownership structure, combining two major U.S. television news organizations with large entertainment and streaming businesses.
That prospect has generated considerable discussion about media consolidation and the future editorial direction of the affected news organizations.
The ownership transition has also produced new proposals concerning editorial independence.
As part of a September settlement involving Paramount, a coalition of 12 states and the Writers Guild of America, Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison agreed to establish an editorial-independence board for CNN and CBS News. The proposed five-member board is intended to establish principles governing journalism and editorial standards at the combined news operations.
The arrangement has nevertheless drawn criticism from some media experts and journalists.
Reuters reported that critics questioned whether the board would have sufficient authority to independently oversee the news organizations because its members would be connected to the corporate ownership structure. Those concerns remain part of the broader debate over how editorial independence should be protected when major news organizations are controlled by large private companies.
Meanwhile, the recent settlement has removed a significant legal obstacle to the proposed merger, but the transaction still faces additional legal and regulatory steps before it can be completed.
The July exchange therefore occurred at a particularly significant moment for CNN.
Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the network, appeared on its flagship Sunday program and agreed to return for a longer interview. At the same time, CNN was preparing for a potential change in ownership that could reshape the company’s broader corporate structure.
